Sainik Schools are residential schools that aim to prepare students for a career in the Armed Forces. They follow a curriculum that is in tune with the National Education Policy and also provide additional training in physical, mental and moral aspects. Sainik Schools were first established in 1961 and there are currently 33 such schools across the country.

In 2022, the Ministry of Defence approved setting up of 21 new Sainik Schools in partnership with NGOs, private schools and state governments. These schools will be distinct from the existing Sainik Schools and will function under the aegis of Sainik Schools Society. They will also follow the Rules and Regulations for new Sainik Schools in partnership mode prescribed by the Society.

The new Sainik Schools will be located in various states and districts as shown in the table below.

The admission process for these new Sainik Schools will be at the class VI level only and will be based on a combination of All-India Sainik School Entrance Examination AISSEE conducted by NTA and a qualifying test for students enrolled in the same school.
